Tips and tricks

In this page we will try to explain the most common defects on the coffee machine Oscar and the procedures to resolve the problem.
For those not in list it is begged to contact us by email.
Pay attention for the present electric tension inside the coffee machine, to always proceed in absence of electric tension
The information has been prepared for informational purposes only, does not guarantee the accuracy and integrity of the information and therefore assumes no responsibility for any problems or damages arising

It is highly recommended the use of a good coffee grinder
The basic rules:
To get a good hot coffee and a lot of steam coffee machine should be on at least 10-15 minutes before use. Follows a list of things to do:
1)
Always leave the cups on the top of the machine a good bartender will always warm the cups.
2)
Leave the filter holder inserted into the group (without the coffee).
3)
Turn on the machine, leaving open the valve knob (clockwise).
4)
Once it starts out a little water from the steam tube, close the steam valve.
5)
When the lamp that indicates the machine has reached temperature open the steam valve again and let out some steam, the light comes back indicating that the electrical resistance was under electric tension. At this time you turn on button to make coffee,  in this way the hot water passes through the filter holder and hot filter holder.
6)
Immediately after using steam for heat milk reopen valve steam, in this way lance steam will cleaned from milk remaining.
7)
When finished to make coffee release the filter holder in this manner the group gasket will not be damaged
8)
use always water Non limestone, fitting and boiler are in copper, and limestone can incrustation and clog machine.
9)
clean the machine periodically as described in the manual

The coffee is not hot (see also the basic rules)

The boiler temperature is too low.
Probable Cause: The probe of the water level has gone out off setting (this depends on the natural deformation of the Teflon due to temperature and long operation) and the boiler was filled with too water.
Procedure:

The first thing you should do, loosen the nut slightly, next push the probe to the bottom and then screw the nut. Next empty the boiler of water too. To do this, turn on the Oscars, leaving the steam valve open. When the water begins out from the steam nozzle immediately turn off the Oscar, disconnect power, remove the water tank and bend the Oscar. Water flows out steam pipe. At this point it should take a lot of water and steam from steam pipe, let the Oscar tilted until it stop running water or steam. Now put the Oscar in the normal position, wipe the Oscar well, insert the tank full of water and switch the coffee machine

Water leaves from the steam nozzle

Probable Cause:
2 way solenoid filled with calcium or, rarely,  solenoid broken.
Prior to the substitution of 2-way valve to make the procedure as described in "the coffee is not hot"

At the right the detailed procedure for disassembling the 2 way solenoid valve and the double fitting.
Use the arrows to change image and click over the image to enlarge

The coffee is cold (the pump is operating, the light resistance is still on)

Cause probable:

  • Heating element of boiler broken

  • Thermofusible broken

  • Pressurestat broken

With a multimeter in ohm mode reading continuity measure, the value read to the heads of the pressurestat should be 0, the value to read the heads of thermofusible must be 0, the value to read the heads of the heating element should be approximately 40 ohms
To make a correct measurement disconnect connector element to be measured

Working for the substitution of the resistance and the thermofusible is long enough, we must completely remove the body of the coffee machine

It goes out little water of the group coffee
(he supposes that the filter coffee is clean, that the shower of the group coffee is clean)

It is probably blocked the 3-way valve.
- Remove the transparent tube, unscrew the nut of the solenoid 3-way valve Photo 1
- Remove the spool and unscrew the two screws, Photo 2

- Turn on the Oscar and press the button to make coffee, will immediately have to go out water of the inferior hole of the coffee group Photo 3

If the water leaves the pump is operating, the heat exchanger and pipes are free.
- Now, unscrew the cylinder and clean Photo 4 and Photo 5

- Replace

No steam of the steam nozzle (lamp resistance goes off normally)

Probably if steam does not leave from the steam wand also coffe result in less heat. Unscrew the spout steam and  with a little long brush ensure that the steam pipe is free

If after you make cleaning the pipe steam we don't have steam the probable cause is to be found in the steam valve and more specifically in the valve, the valve of the green color is glued
Unscrew the nut of the copper pipe from the boiler, press the green valve slightly tighten the nut.

Too much water in the water drain plastic tank

The valve neplex she probably went off regulation

If too much water in the water drain screw the nut clockwise control

Please note that before the operation described above to mark the two points with a marker, the adjustment is made in steps of 1 / 2 turn at a time

How to replace the gasket group coffee machine

Disassembly steam valve

In boilers that are designed you can install the anti-vacuum valve.
You have to unscrew the nut, in its place install the anti-vacuum valve, the pressurestat must be shifted by 45 °
The installation is possible also in the old boilers, photos here

Here is how to perform the installation of a valve OPV (over pressure valve)

To descale, I will quote a text written by the engineer of the Nuova Simonelli
Procedure UNOFFICIAL
recommended by Nuova Simonelli for descaling the Nuova Simonelli Oscar or Musica

If you use a Brita filter properly or water with a low content of limestone, the amount of limestone is deposited in the machine will be very low.
Therefore descaling every six months will certainly be enough.
Use citric acid is quite appropriate. Since Oscar
or Musica is a machine heat exchanger, the part to be descaled is the circuit of the heat exchanger.
The central boiler is only used to generate steam and this process actually uses a very small amount of water.
The descaling of the boiler is not necessary at all.
To descale the heat exchanger, follow this procedure:
Dissolve 200 grams of citric acid in water and pour it into the tank.
The machine will be hot, operate the pump to let half liter of water and citric acid pass through the heat exchanger.
Wait 5 to 10 minutes and repeat with another half liter.
Again wait 5 to 10 minutes.
Fill the tank with fresh water and rinse the system with two liters of water. Finish by passing a final water adding a teaspoon of baking soda to neutralize any traces of acid that may still be present.

My remarks :-)

The procedure explained by the engineer is correct but provided that:
1) The procedure is done at least every 6 months and  low water lime content is used. The risk, if the machine is too calcified is that the water inlet of the heat exchanger becomes clogged irreparably.
2) Before starting the procedure, it is ESSENTIAL
to detach the wire of the 2-way valve.
I explain because these two points are important:
If you do the procedure after too long time and the machine is too full of lime, water inlet to the heat exchanger can be found clogged with pieces of tartar, that could obstruct the acid flow . If you see the hydraulic diagram of the NS Oscar, it is easy to understand that if the water inlet of the heat exchanger is clogged, then the water solution of citric acid passes trough the 3 way solenoid valve immediately to the coffee group, the water doesn't  circulate in the heat exchanger.
It is ESSENTIAL
to disconnect the wire of the 2-way valve for the following reason.
If during the descaling process the probe of the water level in the boiler starts, citric acid  solution  enters in the boiler, with the consequence that generated steam will have a taste of lemon.

First setting grinder Grinta Nuova Simonelli
Preamble
The correct grind of coffee is the main operation to do to get a good espresso coffee.
On the coffee grinder Nuova Simonelli Grinta the regulation is performed by acting on the container containing the coffee beans: screwing or unscrewing the knob will give coarser or finer ground.
The particular thread of the fixed part of the grinder and the coffee container swivel allow a very accurate grinding, the grooves of the rotatable part are 5 mm apart each other, to offer a very accurate adjustment. The labels with numbers 1 to 4 indicate how much the grind will be fine/coarse, they don't refer to any specific measure.

First start Grinta Nuova Simonelli

The adjustment can vary and depends on several factors: different types of coffee, aging of coffee, roasting, climatic conditions, pressing, quantity, etc.. It should, however, start from a first point and then change the grinding as a function of the quantity of liquid poured in the coffee cup.
The real Italian espresso coffee has a dose of 25 ml. that must drop from the filter holder of the coffee machine in 25 seconds, a rate of around a 1 milliliter a 1 second.
Turn on the grinder without coffee in the container, lower the lock pin for grinding adjustment and screw the container of coffee beans until hearing that the two millstones
lightly touching each other. For convenience,  you can mark this adjustment with a felt pen.Unscrew counterclockwise the upper part 3 notches.Fill the filter at the desired quantity and try to make the first coffee.

Hypothesis 1 : the coffee flows fast, it is not creamy, etc.. YOU NEED TO MOVE THE ADJUSTMENT 1 NOTCH  (it is very important, only 1 mark) TIGHTEN THE TOP CLOCKWISE. Iterate this operation to obtain the desired coffee.

Hypothesis 2 : the coffee flows too slowly, it is too dark, it takes too long to fill the cup, etc.. YOU NEED TO MOVE THE ADJUSTMENT ONE NOTCH  (it is very important, only 1 mark) SCREW  THE TOP COUNTERCLOCKWISE.  Iterate this operation to obtain the desired coffee

A different type of coffee will require a different grinding, to obtain the best result you should repeat the process described above, being careful to screw or unscrew the top just a notch each time until you find the perfect grind for this type of coffee.
Note For model AMMT timer is advisable to adjust the time to the maximum time before doing the above steps

Maintenance
The grinder needs regular cleaning, the grinders and the lower container tend to clog due to the coffee powder remains.
To do this you need to unscrew the container of coffee and remove all the residue with the help of an air compressor or with a brush.
Doing so inevitably will move the two points that you have previously labeled with a marker, (mechanically, it is impossible to find the same starting point thread), so you have to redo the whole process described above.

Troubleshooting
The fault rate is almost ZERO, the only problem that could happen is the engine jammed by small bits of coffee remains.
To resolve this issue, simply unscrew the top and act in the cleaning of the bottom part of the grinding, sometimes you must remove the millstone unscrewing COUNTERCLOCKWISE the nut that holds the mill.
